Summary. A negative watching brief was held on the digging of footings trenches for two new buildings in the former Cavalry Barracks in Colchester Garrison. Footings trenches exposed a post-medieval or modern layer containing tile, brick and charcoal and directly overlying natural gravel and sand. An L-shaped trench was also located, probably the grubbed-out footings of a building shown on the 1991 OS map. Areas of modern demolition material and featureless loam were exposed and examination of spoil heaps yielded modern finds and post-medieval bottle glass (not retained).
