Summary. Archaeological monitoring was carried out at The Bell Public House, The Street, Purleigh, Essex during groundworks for an extension to the public house. The works uncovered foundations of 18th- or early 19th-century date, one of which enclosed part of a late 17th- or early 18th-century brick floor. These remains correspond to an annexe attached to the northern part of the public house detailed on 19th-century OS mapping of the area, which was demolished at some point during the mid 20th century.
