Summary. An archaeological evaluation (one trial-trench) was carried out on land north of The Old Bakery, High Street, Hempstead, Essex, in advance of the construction of a new dwelling. The site lies within the village of Hempstead, which has its origins in the medieval period, and north of The Old Bakery, a listed building constructed in the early or mid 19th century. Excavations revealed the remains of a 19th-century building depicted on early editions of the Ordnance Survey map, which stood here until it was demolished at some point after 1960.
