Summary. An archaeological evaluation (five trial-trenches) was carried out on land adjacent to Red House Farm, Sudbury Road, Newton, Suffolk in advance of the construction of nine new dwellings with associated infrastructure. An evaluation on an adjacent site to the south in 2019 revealed a medieval pit, two post-medieval ditches/pits and a modern path along with several undated features. Thirty-one features were uncovered during this current evaluation: eight ditches, seven pits, five tree-throws, four natural features, two gullies, two pits/natural features, a pit/posthole, a pit/tree-throw and a tree-throw/natural feature. Sherds of Roman pottery from a ditch may indicate activity on the site in the Romano-British period. A ditch and a pit/tree-throw both contained medieval pottery sherds, with two other pits producing medieval/post-medieval and post-medieval dating evidence. A number of tree-throws on the site could be indicative of a period of tree-clearance.
